    A Symposium on "Bee Products: Food and Medication"

    The Saad Nassar Hall of Faculty of Agriculture hosted on Monday 30/3/2009 a symposium on "Bee Products: Food and Medication". Held under the auspices of Prof. Dr. Ahmed El Gohary, President of Fayoum University, the symposium was opened by Prof. Dr. Abdel Hamid Abdel Tawab, Vice President for Community Service and Environmental Development. A number of dignitaries were present including; Prof. Dr. Mohamed Hassanein Emara, Professor of Ophthalmology, Faculty of Medicine, Mansoura University and Former President of University, Prof. Dr. Ali Farid, Professor of Gynecology and Obstetrics, Faculty of Medicine, Ain Shams University, Prof. Dr. Samir Seif Al Yazzal, Dean of Faculty of Agriculture, Prof. Dr. Magda Soliman, Vice Dean for Community Service and Environmental Development as well as a group of the faculty staff. The symposium commenced with reciting some verses of the Holy Quran, then a documentary on Faculty of Agriculture was shown. After that, Prof. Dr. Samir Seif Al Yazzal delivered his keynote speech in which he welcomed the attendees. Also, he said, "This symposium is held in conjunction with celebrations of World Apitherapy Day." In his speech, Prof. Dr. Abdel Hamid Abdel Tawab pointed out the importance of honey bee as it is one of the living things that helps sustain the human life. "Scientists have discovered many benefits of honey bee; however honey bee is a subject which needs much more scholarly work," he added. History has recorded honey as the most used medicine in ancient Egypt, he illustrated. The first session of the symposium was composed of two lectures. The first one was on "Honey for treating eye diseases," by Prof. Dr. Mohamed Emara; the second was on "Honey: Food and Medication" with a show of bee venom collector device," by both Prof. Dr. Abdul Halim Musharraf, professor of bees, Department of Plant Protection of Fayoum Faculty of Agriculture and Dr. Karem Mehana, lecturer at Faculty of Agriculture, South Valley University. The second session, on the other hand, dealt with two subjects on "Bee venom therapy" lectured by Prof. Dr. Ali Farid, and "Honey for treating children's diseases" lectured by Dr. Essam Gad Alrab, lecturer at Department of Pediatrics, Faculty of Medicine.
