    Statement regarding student demonstrations
  9-Dec-2013

The following statement from President of Fayoum University Abdel Hamid Abdel Hamid Abdel Tawab Sabry issued a statement regarding student demonstrations that took place on Wednesday 27/11/2013. At the very beginning of the academic year, the University Board of Directors held a meeting with the Student Union and confirmed students' right to demonstrate peacefully as long as they do not hinder the educational process and respect the university values and traditions. In fact, demonstrations repeated daily and the University Administration did not take any action to stop them. But, two weeks ago, students breached the agreement and took to the streets through the Gate of the Faculty of Engineering. This led to the intervention of riot police. Following a meeting with Prof. Vice President for Education and Students' Affairs, students pledged not to do this again and abide by peacefulness. On Wednesday morning (27/11/2013), students did the same thing again and clashed with police. Then, students marched in front of the University Main Building and chanted slogans against the University traditions and values. This happened during the monthly meeting of the University Council. However, demonstrations turned violent and clashes heightened. Students also tried to storm the main building, stone the outer windows and doors and assault security men. Accordingly, the University Council called the police to protect the building and escort the members of the University Council. In this context, the University Administration points out that: 1-The University President requested that no student will be pursued, particularly as the first-term exam approach. 2-No one died as a result of the clashes. At last, the University Administration wishes its students the best of success. University President Prof. Abdel Hamid Abdel Tawab Sabry
