    First Day of 6th Training Course of Service Learning Project

    The Faculty of Education held a two-day training course under the Service Learning Project. It was organized under the aegis of Dean of Faculty of Education Ragaa Ahmed Eid during 12-13 July 2011 in the Training Hall of the Faculty of Education. The course commenced with a note given by Dean Ragaa Eid in which she highlighted the concept and importance of service learning. Following, Professor Mohammad Abdul-Tawab, Vice-Dean for Community Service and Environment Development, gave more details about the nature of service learning – its purposes, paradigms and principles. Following, there was a session for introduction and welcome called "Who Owns the Ball?" . After that, Dr. Amal Gomaa, Lecturer of Curriculum and Methodology of Teaching, talked about the basic concepts of service learning. A worksheet also was conducted to measure to what extent the trainees got grasp of the concept of service learning. Then, Dr. Ahmed Sayed, Lecturer of Mental Health, provided a presentation about the features and benefits of service learning. Through a series of PowerPoint slides Dr. Nabila Marzouk, Lecturer of English Language, Faculty of Arts, discussed the "Stages of Service Learning Preparation ". Also, a worksheet was conducted to measure to what extent the trainees could differentiate between Learn to Serve and Serve to Learn. After that, some models for service learning projects as well as a video about the community participation projects were presented. At the end, trainees made comments on the whole training day. They stressed the necessity to bridge the gap between educational programs and community requirements.
