Under the patronage of Professor Dr. Yasser Magdy Hatata, President of Fayoum University, and Professor Dr. Assem Fouad Al-Essawi, Vice President of the University for Community Service and Environmental Development Affairs, and under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Hamdy Mohamed Ibrahim, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, and Dr. Naglaa El-Sherbiny, Vice President of the Faculty of Medicine for Community Service and Development Affairs. This morning, the awareness initiative on the dangers of addiction, organized by the College of Medicine in cooperation with the Community Service and Environmental Development Sector, at the College of Dentistry, continued in the presence of Prof. Dr. Al-Shaima Ahmed, Vice Dean of the College for Community Service and Environmental Development Affairs, today, Thursday, 3/14/2024, in the college’s conference hall,
Dr. Ahmed Sayed Ragheb, a psychiatrist and neurologist at Fayoum University Hospitals, lectured in the presence of faculty members and male and female students at the college.
At the beginning of the symposium, Prof. Dr. Al-Shaima Ahmed, Vice Dean of the College for Community Service and Environmental Development Affairs, welcomed the attendees and Her Excellency spoke about the importance of combating addiction. She pointed out the importance of the symposium in shedding light on the phenomenon of drug abuse, raising awareness of its dangers, and its harm to the individual and society economically and socially. She urged the importance of spreading Means of awareness and education about the harms and dangers of drugs and their abuse through holding these seminars, conferences, and workshops to educate male and female students about their harms.

Dr. Ahmed Sayed Ragheb about addiction as a major problem among young people, as the percentage of addicts in Egypt is 2.5%, and this leads to many harmful problems, whether at the individual or societal level. It leads to fibrosis of brain cells and body organs such as the liver, pancreas, kidneys, etc. In addition to many psychological diseases, in addition to disturbances in social relations, this costs the state in many economic, social, and security aspects.
His Excellency explained the methods of prevention and treatment of addiction through holding programs and seminars to spread the culture of health awareness to society, good family education, avoiding bad companions, and not taking any medications without consulting specialist doctors. The addict can be treated by completely stopping the drug, then psychologically and socially rehabilitating him. To engage again in society, then he addressed the types of addictions such as gambling, pornographic films, smartphones, and social media, which affect humans in the same way as drugs. At the end of the symposium, a comprehensive dialogue was opened with the audience to respond to all the various inquiries and questions they face and respond to them with full transparency.
