The role of art in shaping human conscience was the main topic of a symposium held on Wednesday 12 November 2014 at Fayoum University's Said Soliman Hall. The event held under the auspices of Prof. Khaled Hamza, President of Fayoum University, and was attended by Editor-in-Chief of Albawaba News Mohamed Al-Baz, Managing Director of Al Shorouk daily newspaper Talaat Ismael, and Actors Mohamed Lotfy and Mohamed Gomaa. The symposium was opened by a speech by University President Khaled Hamza who stressed the role of art with its different forms in shaping the human conscience and addressing pressing national and social problems. He added that the messages delivered by journalists, artists, and actors should be sublime. According to Prof. Farid Awad Hedar, Vice President of Fayoum University for Community Service and Environment Development, art is a double-edged weapon and should help build the society, contribute to its coherence and create positive attitudes. He also stressed the need for adopting the concept of "Art for Society's Sake" so as to discuss our problems and work together to find solutions. Speaking during the event, Mohamed Al Baz said that when media agencies publish bad news this does not mean that they are corrupt and aim to mislead people, but this means the truth itself is bad. He also added that art, culture and media should be objective when mirroring the real situation in Egypt. According to Talaat Ismael, art is not evil; it is a key to help nations prosper. He also called for working hard to build a better Egypt, particularly after the revolutions of January 25th and June 30th. Also, both Actors Mohamed Lotfy and Mohamed Ramadan stressed the role of art in depicting everyday life events and criticizing negative aspects.
