A workshop entitled “Geographer’s Tools from the Compass to Geographic Information Systems (GIS)” at the Institute for Research and Strategic Studies for the Nile Basin Countries

Under the patronage of Prof. Dr. Yasser Magdy Hatata, President of Fayoum University, and Prof. Dr. Assem El-Essawy, Vice President of the University for Community Service and Environmental Development and Supervisor of the Institute of Research and Strategic Studies for Nile Basin Countries, and under the supervision of Dr. Ahmed Fouad El-Maghazi, Vice Dean of the Institute for Community Service and Environmental Development,

the Institute organized a workshop entitled "Geographical Tools: From the Compass to Geographic Information Systems (GIS)."

The workshop was presented by Dr. Ahmed Mostafa Marwan, Lecturer of Population Geography in the Department of Geographical Studies at the Institute, and was attended by a number of faculty members, staff, and students. It was held on Thursday, October 2, 2025, in the Institute's conference hall.

Dr. Ahmed Fouad El-Maghazi explained that the workshop aimed to raise awareness among all participants about the importance of geography and its tools, which enhance their understanding of the significance of geography and its role in supporting decision-making in various fields. During the workshop, Dr. Ahmed Mustafa Marwan reviewed the historical development of geographical tools, from traditional instruments such as the sun, stars, moon, and the traditional compass, to the latest technologies represented by Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and artificial intelligence (AI).

The workshop concluded by emphasizing the importance of GIS as a modern science that contributes to understanding and analyzing geographical phenomena and its role in supporting decision-making in various fields.

At the end of the workshop, Dr. Ahmed Mustafa Marwan, a lecturer in Population Geography in the Department of Geographical Studies at the Institute, was honored for his efforts in facilitating the workshop and serving the educational process at the Institute.
